The biggest practical difference shows up when glass breaks. Annealed glass usually breaks into large, sharp pieces. Tempered glass is designed to break into many small, pebble-like fragments that are far less likely to cause a serious cut. It still creates a mess, but it is the safer break pattern for high-risk locations.
Neither type is automatically “better” in every application. Tempered glass is the right call where people may fall into it, lean against it, or hit it with a door, elbow, chair, or object. Annealed glass remains a smart, cost-conscious option for many decorative and protected uses.

Where Annealed Glass Still Makes Sense

Most standard wall mirrors are made with annealed glass and a reflective backing. For a bathroom vanity mirror mounted securely on a wall, that is often the appropriate choice. For these projects, the edgework still matters. A clean polished edge, accurate cutout, and precise fit are what make custom glass look intentional instead of improvised.
Replacement glass that needs field adjustment
Some replacement projects involve older frames, uneven openings, or conditions that are not fully visible until the existing glass is removed. Annealed glass can offer flexibility when cutting or fitting adjustments may be required during fabrication.
That flexibility disappears after tempering. A tempered panel cannot be trimmed, drilled, or notched once it leaves the tempering process. Any change means making a new panel. This is one reason careful on-site measuring is not optional for shower glass, doors, and other safety-glass projects.
Strength Is Not the Only Factor

What About Laminated Glass?
Laminated glass is worth mentioning because it solves a different problem. It uses two or more sheets of glass bonded with a clear interlayer. When laminated glass breaks, the interlayer helps hold the fragments in place rather than allowing the panel to fall apart.
That makes it useful for certain storefronts, railings, security-minded applications, and projects where retaining the glass after breakage matters. It can also help reduce sound transfer. Laminated glass is not a universal replacement for tempered glass, but it may be the better specification when the project calls for it.
